Delta College Falls to Bay College in District Quarterfinal
March 4, 2025 – Bay College
The Delta College men's basketball team saw their season come to an end Tuesday night in the NJCAA Region XII District Quarterfinals, falling to Bay College 93-78.
Delta (11-17, 6-8 MCCAA) fought hard but could not overcome Bay College's (24-5, 12-2 MCCAA) efficient shooting and strong defensive presence. The Pioneers trailed 41-32 at halftime, but despite a spirited second-half push, they were unable to close the gap against the Norse, who outscored them 52-46 in the final 20 minutes.
Offensive Struggles from Deep
The Pioneers struggled from beyond the arc, shooting just 20.0% (4-20) from three-point range. Carter Gensch provided a spark off the bench, leading the team with 16 points while knocking down two of Delta's four three-pointers. Jayden Hackett added 11 points and four rebounds, while Brendon Schlink and Evan Booker each contributed 10 points.
Bay College, on the other hand, shot an efficient 55.0% (33-60) from the field and 36.0% (9-25) from deep. Ryan Sweeney led the Norse with a game-high 21 points, going 10-for-13 from the free-throw line. KaiRee Gadson added 13 points, and D'Marco Chelley and Tre Sanigar each had 11.
Battle on the Boards
Bay College dominated the rebounding battle, grabbing 32 boards compared to Delta's 35. However, the Norse made the most of their second-chance opportunities, with key offensive rebounds leading to crucial baskets. Mykel Lindsey led Bay College with nine rebounds, while Delta's Willie Humphrey controlled the paint with eight rebounds of his own.
Season Comes to a Close
With the loss, Delta College's season comes to an end. Despite the early playoff exit, the Pioneers showed resilience throughout the season and will look to build on their experience heading into next year. Meanwhile, Bay College advances to the NJCAA Region XII District Semifinals, continuing their pursuit of a championship.
