Wichita, KS – The Apaches started their first day of pool play in the National Tournament with a strong performance against the #11 Western Nebraska Cougars. Although the Apaches were slow to find their rhythm initially, they quickly picked up momentum and secured a 3-1 victory.
The Cougars dominated possession in the first 10 minutes of play, but their passes failed to connect effectively. Meanwhile, Apache goalie Alfred Mikkelson was a standout player, making seven saves throughout the match, including two crucial ones early on to keep the game scoreless.
The Apaches found their stride in the 19th minute when Carlo Romberg netted the opening goal, assisted by Hagan Cupido. The momentum continued as Cupido scored his own goal in the 36th minute, giving the Apaches a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
In the second half, the Apaches maintained control until the 64th minute, when the Cougars managed to slip one past Mikkelson. However, the Apaches sealed the game with another goal by Cupido before the final whistle, securing their victory.
The Apaches will continue pool play in the National Tournament with their next match against #7 Indian Hills at 12:30 in Wichita, Kansas.
