Baseball Picks Up Split at So. Maryland

LA PLATA, Md. – The Anne Arundel Community College baseball team won the first game of a doubleheader at College of Southern Maryland Thursday afternoon. The Riverhawks had 12 hits in the opener and fended off a late rally to win 9-6. CSM rode an early lead to defeat AACC, 7-1, in the nightcap.

Game One

The Riverhawks totaled 12 hits and five stolen bases in game one, and used a five-run fourth inning to take a 6-0 lead. AACC added two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth, and were chased by the Hawks who scored two runs in the fourth, fifth, and seventh innings.

AACC put up five runs on five hits in the fourth, getting RBIs from Camden Hodges and Russell Turner. With two outs and two on, an infield error sent two more across the plate. AACC again got runners on the corners, seeing one more run come across courtesy of Travis Fleshman.

The Riverhawks had another two-out rally in the fifth, scoring on a Turner single to left and a single from Griffin Klein. JC Wilson drove in the ninth run in the sixth on one of two doubles on the day for the second baseman.

The Riverhawks combined for five stolen bases in the game, led by two from Turner.

Starter Evan Pohlman struck out five and walked three while allowing two runs on two hits to earn the win. Evan Birch picked up a three-inning save, striking out six while allowing three earned runs on seven hits.

Game Two

CSM used a three-run home run to jump out to a five-run lead in the first inning, and added single runs in the fifth and sixth. AACC's lone run came in the sixth on a double from JC Wilson, who drove in Sam Ross who led off the inning with a double.

The Riverhawks got their first hits of the game in the third, but didn't get a runner past second base until scoring in the sixth.

Starter Rocco Dietz shouldered the loss with five runs on three hits. Matt Donaldson relieved pitched the second inning before giving way to Nolan Spring in the third. Spring struck out three while allowing one run on two hits. Austin Ferreira closed out the game with one run on three hits and two strikeouts.

AACC is back in action at home on Sunday, March 30, in a 12 p.m. doubleheader against Montgomery College.
