
Softball Splits vs Columbia State & Jackson State
Cleveland State split road conference doubleheaders on Friday, February 28 and Saturday, March 1 winning vs Columbia State 17-6 while losing 9-1, then best Jackson State 13-7 before coming up short 8-4. Freshman Sierra Howard was the winning pitcher in both games.
Currently the Cougars have an overall season record of 4-8 with a conference mark of 2-2.
Game One Recap vs Columbia State
The Cougars banged out 16 hits in the 17-6 win vs Columbia as Carissa Montgomery blasted a two-out grand slam in the fifth inning to break open the game for a 9-1 lead. Montgomery had a total of five RBI's in the game while Layla Pettigrew plated three with a first inning single and a seventh inning double.
In support of Howard's second win of the young season, Desiree Nance and Pettigrew each had three hits while Montgomery, Lilly Griffitts, Ava Layne and Milan Pemberton each had two hits. Taylor Hancock had one hit along with a sacrifice fly.
Game Two Recap vs Columbia State
In the 9-1 loss in game two, Cleveland State's bats went silent as Pettigrew provided the lone hit with a booming homerun leading off the second inning knotting the score at one. Columbia scored runs in the first, third, fifth and sixth innings.
Game One Recap vs Jackson State
Down 5-1 going into the fifth inning Cleveland State started to come alive scoring two runs on a two-run homer from Pettigrew with Nance on base with one of her five hits on the game. In the sixth, still down 5-3 the Cougars scored five on RBI singles from Griffitts, Nance, Pettigrew, a stolen base and a wild pitch. In the seventh Cleveland State added five more runs on an RBI double from Griffitts, a two-run single by Pettigrew, and a Nance and Jensen RBI single.
In support of Howard's third win of the season Nance had five hits, Pettigrew had four while Griffitts had three. Montgomery lashed out two hits while Layne, Heidi Johnson, Hancock, Jensen and Pemberton each had one for the final score of 13-7.
Game Two Recap vs Jackson State
The Cougars jumped off to a 4-1 lead with a two-run homer by Pettigrew in the second inning followed by a two-run shot off the bat of Layne in the third. That would be it for the Cougars in the 8-4 loss as Jackson scored three in the third and fourth innings leading to the final score. Layne had three hits while Griffitts, Nance, Pettigrew, Falyn Baggett and Brooklyn Deaver each had one.

Cleveland State returns to the field hosting a double header on Saturday against Glen Oaks Community College. First pitch is scheduled for noon with game two slated for 2 p.m.
