Long distance shooting sends Barton women to road loss at No. 5 Dodge City
An opening administrative technical free throw and three-pointer set the tone Saturday afternoon in Dodge City as the No. 5 Dodge City Community College women's basketball team enjoyed a 21-point differential behind the arc in leading wire-to-wire to defeat Barton Community College 92-55 inside the Student Activity Center.
The Conquistadors finished 12-of-27 beyond the arc, draining two of those during a 14-7 second quarter close in building up a 15-point halftime lead before breaking things open sinking seven second half treys outscoring the Cougars 52-30 over the final 20-minutes.
Barton heads into the holiday break sitting at 1-7 in league play and 5-9 overall while the Conquistadors win the fifth straight in the series to remain tied atop the conference standings at 7-0 and 12-1 overall.
Following in the long holiday break, the Cougars get back to action Wednesday, January 8 in a 5:30 p.m. tip hosting Fort Hays Tech Northwest.
Sophomore Vivian Onugha led a trio of Cougars' in double-figure scoring posting her third straight and 10th double-double of the season by putting up 19 points and grabbing a game high 10 rebounds in helping Barton to a slim plus-three rebound advantage.
Saddled by first half foul trouble both Regina Donanu and Alaina Eck reached double-figure scoring adding 12 and 10 points respectfully while combining for three of Barton's five made three-pointers made.
Layla-J Cameron led a four pack of Conquistadors in double-digit scoring with 19 points, six rebounds and game high five assists. Shorna Preston turned in an all-around performance adding 16 points, six rebounds, four assists and forced six of Dodge City's 15 steals coming off 26 Cougar turnovers. Konstantina Mantziori contributed with 15 points and five steals while Savi Mi led Dodge City's 27-7 advantage in bench production adding 13 points behind her 3-for-3 outside shooting.
