Knights suffer first road loss in doubleheader to Colby

Colby, Kan. – North Platte fell in a doubleheader on Friday to Colby Community College to open their first road action of the season.

The Trojans powered in four runs in the bottom of the first inning, before an Alieze Moreno sacrifice fly plated Wren Herrick from third to put the Knights on the board.

Colby added three more runs in the bottom half of the frame, but a one run third and a three run fourth inning cut the margin to two, 9-7.  During the fourth inning, Sarah Perez connected on her second home run of the season, sending the ball over the center field wall. 

Colby was held scoreless in bottom of the fourth inning but recorded two runs in the fifth inning to take game one.

Sheena Smith (0-2) pitched six innings giving up nine runs on 11 hits, while striking out three and walking five for the Knights.

It did not take long for the Trojans bats to come alive in game two, as they scored 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning. Colby went on to score four more runs in the third inning to build a 14-0 lead.

Perez energized the Knights offense with a double to left field to open the fourth inning. Two batters later Herrick stepped into the box and sent the first pitch to left field to plate Perez.

North Platte was held off the board in the fifth inning as Colby added one more run to earn the run-rule victory.

In the circle, Moreno pitched four innings while giving up 15 runs on 14 hits and struck out two batters.

North Platte (0-4) will travel to Norfolk on Sunday for a doubleheader with the Hawks of Northeast Community College. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
