DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - It was a long time coming for Daytona State College, but the Falcons finally captured their first FCSAA DI Women's Soccer Championship on Sunday with a 6-0 win over Eastern Florida State College on Sunday evening.
Both teams will advance to next weekend's Southeast District Tournament in Melbourne, Fla., where the Falcons will be the No. 1 seed in the four-team event and the Titans will be No. 3.
Sunday's match was all Daytona State.
Sienna Gillespie scored twice in a span of 53 seconds, the second unassisted, to give Daytona State a 2-0 lead. With goalkeeper Julianna Trujillo in the midst of her second straight shutout in the tournament, that was more than enough offense for the host Falcons.
Daytona State outshot Eastern Florida State, 23-7, including 15-3 in the second half when the Falcons added four goals.
Jimena Castro's goal in the 41st minute made it 3-0 then the Falcons scored three times in the match's final six minutes.
Madison Gellner's unassisted goal gave Daytona State a 4-0 lead. Gillespie assisted on Mia Gonzalez' goal in the 88th minute then scored a minute later for the hat trick.
Gillespie was named the Tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
Daytona State's Hope Clark was named FCSAA Coach of the Year, by virtue of guiding the Falcons to the win.
