Matadors Baseball uses big innings to earn season-opening doubleheader sweep over Coyotes

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Baseball team (2-0) opened up the 2025 season with a doubleheader sweep of Chandler-Gilbert (0-2) on Friday evening, winning game one 16-6 before coming from behind to win game two 12-9 in Chandler, Ariz., in non-conference play.

Luis Angulo drove in four runs as the Matadors used a 10-run sixth inning to pull away from the host Coyotes to open the season with a win.

The Matadors took a 1-0 lead in the first inning before the Coyotes answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning. Arizona Western scored one run in each of the first three innings to jump out to a 3-1 lead but Chandler-Gilbert was able to add three more runs of their own, taking a 4-3 lead with a two-run fourth inning.

Arizona Western broke the game open in the sixth inning, scoring 10 runs before adding three more in the seventh.

Angulo went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, driving in four runs while Nathan Houston knocked in three runs, going 1-for-5. The Matadors pounded out 13 hits in the win and Yoni Castro earned the win on the mound, allowing two runs in three innings of relief.

After falling behind 6-0 in the first three innings of game two, the Matadors chipped away, scoring two runs in the fourth inning and added another in the sixth before Andres Ontieveros pulled the Matadors to within a run with a two-run homer to right field.

Ontieveros gave the Matadors the lead, clearing the bases with a three-run triple in the top of the ninth inning to start a seven-run frame.

Ontierveros went 2-for-5 with five runs batted in while Javier Diaz collected a pair of hits and knocked in two runs in the win. Cade Webber earned the win in relief for the Matadors, striking out two batters in 2.0 innings.

Arizona Western returns to action on Saturday, January 25, taking on Chandler-Gilbert in a doubleheader beginning at noon from Chandler-Gilbert Baseball Field.
