LEESBURG, Fla. (Softball) – Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC) softball continued Sun-Lakes Conference play over the weekend with No. 3 St. Johns River State College. The Lakehawks took one of three from the Vikings in their first meeting of the regular season.
Game 1 – SJRSC 5, Lake-Sumter 3
The Lakehawks took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after a double to the right side of the field scored Emma Chisholm from first base. In the top of the fifth, the Lakehawks extended the lead by two with a pair of doubles from Payton Parkes and Malayla Miller followed by another basehit from Chisholm.
Down by three, the Vikings put two on the board in the bottom of the fifth and took the lead in the sixth to secure the game one win.
Starting pitcher Amy Bak recorded the loss with five innings pitched, moving to 3-2 on the season. She allowed five runs, three earned, on five hits and four walks with six strikeouts.
Game 2 – SJRSC 0, Lake-Sumter 7
The Lakehawks came out swinging on Saturday outhitting the Vikings nine hits to four in the shutout victory.
Chisholm went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and one run scored. Kaitlyn Duquette went 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored.
Sophomore Savannah Ellis had one of the best outings in her career at Lake-Sumter tossing a shutout against one of the hottest offenses in the country. Ellis improved to a 2-3 record on the season after allowing just four hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Game 3 – SJRSC 12, Lake-Sumter 0 (Five innings)
Lake-Sumter was unable to keep their winning momentum going into game three of the series after a nine-run first inning from St. Johns. Lake-Sumter had just four hits to the Vikings' 14 in the mercy rule loss.
Danika Johns recorded the loss after pitching part of the first innings. She allowed three runs on three hits, two of those being Viking homeruns. Kendal Rumer entered the game in relief to finish the first inning and allowed six runs on six hits.
Kaitlyn Duquette took the mound in the second inning. She held the Vikings to just three runs, two earned, on six hits with a pair of strikeouts.
With one win, Lake-Sumter are at 9-9 overall with a 4-2 record in conference. The Lakehawks move to fourth in Sun-Lakes Conference standing.
