Men's Basketball uses hot start to race past Community Christian 133-74

WICHITA, Kan. – The Arizona Western Matadors Men's Basketball team (6-3, 1-1) returned home to open its home conference schedule with a 133-74 win over Community Christian (1-3, 0-2) on Saturday afternoon at the House Gymnasium.

Eight Matadors scored in double figures in the win, led by Engel Gutierrez, who scored 19 points off the bench and went 8-for-9 from the free-throw line.

The Matadors scored 36 of the first 40 points, opening the game on a 36-4 to run, never looking back and leading wire-to-wire.

Arizona Western scored 74 points in the first half, outscoring the Saints 74-29 in the first 20 minutes. Edwin Suarez scored all 11 of his points in the first half while Matt Anglo scored 10 of his 14 total points in the first 20 minutes.

After Community Christian put together a mini run early in the second half, the Matadors outscored Community Christian 59-45 in the second half, scoring a season-high in points with 133.

Leano Rolle and Darnell Childs both scored 13 points while Boubacar Diatta and Kaleb Myers each scored 12 points in the win. Jared Arias set a career-high with 11 points on 4-for-5 shooting in a career-high 21 minutes.

The Matadors are back in action on Friday, November 29, hosting AZ Sol at the House Gymnasium with tipoff set for 7:00 pm. Tickets are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for seniors while Arizona Western College students get in free with their AWC ID.
