NICEVILLE, Fla. - Pensacola State College won the FCSAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship on Saturday, defeating Gulf Coast State College, 54-51.
The Pirates' last FCSAA Championship came in 1993, a season that ultimately ended with the school's first and only NJCAA National Championship. They'll head back to Hutch for the first time since by virtue of winning the FCSAA's automatic bid.
Pensacola State had fallen to the Commodores in each of the previous three meetings this season.
Points were hard to come by on Saturday. The game was tied at 4-all five minutes then, following ties at 6-all and 8-all, the Pirates rattled off a 7-0 run to grab a 15-9 lead at the 8:46 mark. Isaiah Sutherland's three gave Pensacola State its largest lead of the game, 22-13, with 3:06 left in the half. As it did in Friday's semifinal vs. Daytona State College, Gulf Coast State had the final surge before the half, scoring four unanswered points to pull within 22-17 at the intermission.
The Commodores led 38-35 nearing the midway point of the second half but an 8-0 run gave Pensacola State a 43-38 lead by the 7:44 mark and the Pirates kept the Commodores at arm's length the rest of the way.
Dylan Colon led the Pirates with 12 points, nine rebounds and six assists, and was named the Tournament's Most Outstanding Player. Amarion Savage and Dimitri Clerc joined Colon on the All-Tournament Team, as did Gulf Coast State's Chip Brunt, Christian Harmon and Truman Claytor.
Harmon led the Commodores with 15 points on Saturday.
Rounding out the All-Tournament team was: K'jei Parker, Florida SouthWestern; Ty Owens, Polk State; Jaylin Payne, Daytona State; Huascar Cuevas, Daytona State; Hassan Belkhaddar, Miami Dade; and Randy Smith, Miami Dade.
Pensacola State's Pete Pena was named FCSAA Coach of the Year.
