Schmitz and Winnen Each Score 30 In Loss To Wheeling JV
December 15, 2024 — The Lorain County Community College women's basketball team fell to Wheeling University's JV squad, 94-84, on Sunday afternoon.
Despite the loss, the Commodores put up a season-high 84 points, shot an impressive 63% from three-point range, and committed a season-low 11 turnovers.
LCCC's dynamic duo of Ally Winnen (Lorain, Ohio/Elyria Catholic HS) and Abigail Schmitz (Amherst, Ohio/Firelands HS) kept the Commodores competitive against the Cardinals. Winnen, who was named the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference Player of the Week earlier this week, recorded her third 20-20 game of the season with 31 points and 23 rebounds.
Schmitz complemented Winnen's performance with a season-high 30 points, eight rebounds, and three steals on the defensive end, showcasing her all-around game.
Chloe Meng (Elyria, Ohio/Open Door Christian HS) also scored in double figures with 11 points.
The Commodores trailed by 10 points at halftime and fell behind by as many as 18 midway through the third quarter. However, they mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter, cutting the deficit to just eight points. Unfortunately, that was as close as they would get, as the Cardinals maintained their lead with hot shooting from beyond the arc.
