Viking men fall to Ancilla College
Glen Oaks drop home hoops matchup vs. Chargers.
CENTREVILLE — Coming out firing early in the first half, the Glen Oaks Community College men's basketball team's offense started to fizzle out Wednesday at home in a 79-65 loss to a tough squad from Marian University's Ancilla College.
The Vikings sprinted out to a 7-2 lead but the Chargers, who improved to 13-4 overall and 2-0 in MCCAA Western Conference play with the victory, took a 14-13 lead with 12:15 to play in the first half and closed out the opening period on a 26-13 for a 15-point advantage.
Glen Oaks cut the defecit to single digits several times in the second half but couldn't close the gap.
It was a 16-point night for freshman forward Amauri Moore and a 13-point performance by sophomore Aaron Humphrey that guided the Vikings (8-8, 1-1). Freshman point guard Mike Phillips produced 10 points, sophomore guard Darrius Roach tossed in nine, freshman point guard Will Jamison had eight, freshman forward Akin Smith finished with five and freshman guard Nate Keil added four points.
The Vikings only attempted seven free throws in the game and knocked down five. Ancilla went 16-for-18 at the stripe for 88 percent and finished with 52 points in the paint.
Humphrey pulled down a team-high eight rebounds and Keil had seven boards. Roach paced the squad with five assists.
Glen Oaks takes the court again Saturday at 3 p.m. at Lake Michigan College.
