Sophomore Trevian Carson of Des Moines collected a double-double with 23 points and 14 rebounds as the DMACC men's basketball team handed Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) an 88-65 loss January 22 at Norfolk, Neb.
Freshmen Andrew Austin of Rock Rapids, Rylan Smith of Lincoln, Neb., and Dylan Omweno of Apple Valley, Minn., contributed 17, 12 and 11 points respectively as the Bears improved to 19-2 overall and 9-1 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) with their seventh consecutive victory.
DMACC, ranked sixth in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), led most of the time in a contest that featured six ties and four lead changes. The last tie came at 23-23 with 8 minutes, 18 seconds to go in the opening half and DMACC used a 21-10 run in the last three and a half minutes of the half for a 44-33 lead at intermission.
The Bears opened the second half with a 10-5 run that included back-to-back three-pointers from Austin and led 52-38 with 16:25 to play. SWCC never got closer than 11 points and trailed by as many as 27 points in the final minute.
DMACC shot 43 percent, making 33 of 77 field goal attempts, including 16-of-29 from three-point range. The Bears were 6-of-7 from the free throw line.
Austin made four of his six three-point attempts, Smith was 4-of-7 from beyond the arc and Omweno made three of five attempts from long range.
NECC shot 41 percent, draining 25 of 61 field goal attempts. The Hawks were 5-of-23 from three-point range and 10-of-13 from the free throw line.
Carson's 14 rebounds helped DMACC to a 41-31 advantage on the boards. Sophomore Da'Shon Fisher of Iowa City had seven rebounds and Smith came away with six. Smith dished out five assists, sophomore Demerius Shakur of Milwaukee, Wis., had four and Carson finished with three. Smith also topped the Bears in steals with four and Fisher and freshman Jalen Hayes of Milwaukee, Wis., had three apiece.
The DMACC men's basketball team will host Southwestern Community College (SWCC) Jan. 25. Game time is 3 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium. SWCC is 10-12 overall and 4-6 in the ICCAC. The Spartans dropped a 79-65 decision to DMACC when the two teams played Nov. 30 at Creston.
