Cyclones sweep Spoon River

Cyclones sweep Spoon River

In their opening doubleheader of the season, the Cyclones started with a sweep at Spoon River College.

GAME ONE
The Snappers may have started strong, but the Cyclones battled back immediately. After Spoon River scored three in the bottom of the first, Moraine Valley doubled the effort and came up with six in the top of the second. Timothy O'Connell (1-for-2) and Troy Vosburgh each walked before Jayden Armstrong (3-for-4 2 RBIs) singled to load the bases. Then Preston Lund walked to score a run. Christian Rosales (1-for-4, 2 RBIs) then drove in two more with a single to right field. Andrew Phelan hit a sac fly and Alejandro Munoz (2-for-2, 2 RBIs) tripled to get the Cyclones up 6-3.

In the third, Lund drove in another run and Munoz homered in the fourth. Armstrong hit an RBI single in the fifth and an RBI double in the seventh to help Moraine Valley extend their lead. After that, on the mound Caston Norris held off the Snappers for the 10-7 victory.

Xavier Aguilar started on the bump for the Cyclones striking out one and allowing two earned runs. Norris wrapped up the game with seven strikeouts.

GAME TWO
The second game saw a level battle between each team battling back, including with a five-run inning, before the Cyclones earned the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh.

With two outs in the second, walks were the Cyclones' friend. Four walks and one single from Aiden Radtke (1-for-3) gave Moraine Valley the 2-0 edge. The Snappers tied the score in the third. The Cyclones' big inning came in the fifth. It started with Armstrong getting hit by a pitch, Vosburgh (1-for-4) singling and Ryder Johnson bunting and reaching on an error to load the bases. A wild pitch allowed the Cyclones to get ahead 3-2. Rosales hit a sac fly, Phelan (1-for-4) hit an RBI single and Munoz (2-for-3) hit a two-run single to extend the lead 7-2.

The Snappers, however, would not be outdone. After two outs, Spoon River walked and singled their way to a tie game. In their last at-bat, the Cyclones scored the winning run after Radtke and Robert Kutt each walked and advanced a base on a wild pitch. With Norris in as a pinch runner on third, he stole home to score the game winner.

Vosburgh came in as relief in the seventh, allowing one walk and striking out the rest for the Cyclones to hang on to the 8-7 victory. Joshua Keller started the game for the Cyclones, striking out four and allowing only two runs.
