
CHATTANOOGA, TN – No. 10 Walters State scored 12 runs in the final four innings on Friday afternoon against Chattanooga State, going on for a 15-8 win over the Tigers.
With the win, the Senators improved to 15-2-1 overall and 5-2 in TCCAA play.
At the plate, Tyler Myatt had four hits and three RBIs to lead the way while Jack Vogele hit a go-ahead grand slam in the sixth inning and drove in five runs in the game. Jack Torbett had three hits and three RBIs, as well.
On the mound, Walker Morgan got the start and threw 4.1 innings. Morgan allowed six runs, five earned, on seven hits and struck out two. Brady Scott (1-0) replaced Morgan with an out in the fifth and threw the next 3.2 innings. Scott allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits and struck out three.
Matthew Porchas pitched the final inning, striking out two to secure the win.
Chattanooga State got things started with three runs in the bottom of the first, but Walters State tied things in the top of the fourth. After an error allowed Vogele to reach and Holden Pantier was hit by a pitch, Myatt came up and singled home Vogele to make it 3-1. Later in the inning, Walters State loaded the bases for Torbett and he delivered with a two-RBI single that tied the game.
However, Chattanooga State answered back in the fifth with three runs to go in front 6-3. In the sixth, the Senators' rally began with two outs as Carson Cabbage and Torbett walked and Taylor Harris was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Kole Fenton was next up, and he reached on an error that scored Cabbage. After another error allowed Torbett to score to make it 6-5, Vogele gave Walters State the lead for good with a grand slam way over the fence in left that made it 9-6.
Chattanooga State got a run back in the bottom of the sixth, but Cabbage singled home Myatt in the seventh to make it 10-7. The two teams traded runs in the eighth, Walters State's coming on an RBI single by Myatt, but Walters State broke the game open with four runs in the top of the ninth. Those runs came on an RBI single by Vogele, a sacrifice fly by Pantier that scored Nate Conner, a Myatt RBI single and a Torbett RBI single that made it 15-8.
Porchas shut Chattanooga State down in the bottom of the ninth, and the Senators grabbed the opener.
