YUMA, Ariz. – The No. 6 ranked Arizona Western Matadors Men's Soccer team (14-1-2) won its third consecutive West District title, beating No. 16 ranked Snow College (13-4-2) 2-1 in the second overtime on Saturday afternoon in Ephraim, Utah, at Snow College Soccer Complex.
Saneyuki Yamagata secured a fourth consecutive trip to the NJCAA DI Men's Soccer Championship with a goal in the 101st minute, scoring sitting down as he tapped the ball into the wide-open net, giving the Matadors the 2-1 win in the opening minute of the second overtime period.
The Matadors fell behind in the first half as Snow College grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute, just moments after Peter Yaro came close to opening the scoring before hitting the post to keep the game scoreless.
Trailing 1-0 in the second half, the Matadors received a penalty, which Matadors' goalkeeper Esteban Gonzalez slotted home to level the scoreline at 1-1, scoring his second goal of the season.
The Matadors dominated possession in the first overtime period, once again hitting the post early in the first extra 10 minutes before breaking through early in the second overtime to win the West District title.
Arizona Western will now wait to see where it will seeded in the 2024 NJCAA DI Men's Soccer Championship, taking place at the Stryker Complex in Wichita, Kan., November 17-23.
