Freshman Dylan Omweno of Apple Valley, Minn., scored 21 points and sophomore Da'Shon Fisher of Iowa City added 20 as the DMACC men's basketball team opened the new year with a 96-80 win over North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) January 4 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
Sophomore Trevian Carson of Des Moines and freshman Jaden Jefferson of Forney, Texas, scored 13 points apiece and sophomore Jamal Ambrose of Apple Valley, Minn., came away with 10 points as the Bears improved to 14-2 overall and 5-1 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).
DMACC, ranked seventh in the Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), took control of the game in the first half, opening up a 44-35 advantage at halftime. The Bears led by as many as 22 points in the second half in handing the Trojans their fourth loss against 11 victories. They are 4-2 in the ICCAC.
Omweno got his 21 points from eight in 14 attempts, including 5-of-10 from three-point range and Fisher was 8-of-12 from the field, including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. He was 2-of-3 from the free throw line.
DMACC shot 52 percent from the field, hitting 35 of 67 field goal attempts. The Bears were 9-of-28 from three-point range and 17-of-26 from the free throw line.
Carson and freshman Andrew Austin of Rock Rapids grabbed seven rebounds apiece as DMACC came away with a 38-31 advantage on the boards. Jefferson added six rebounds and sophomore Demerius Shakur of Milwaukee, Wis., had five. Carson led the Bears in assists with eight and in steals with three.
The DMACC men's basketball team will face Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) Jan. 8 inside the DMACC gymnasium. Game time is 7:30 p.m. ILCC is 9-6 overall and 2-4 in the ICCAC.
