Women’s Soccer Receives First Loss of Season in Plains District Semifinal

The Kansas City Kansas Community College women's soccer team fell to No.19 Cowley College, 1-0 Nov. 7 at the KCKCC soccer field in the semifinal of the NJCAA Plains District Tournament.

The low scoring affair was far from a boring game. Both teams tallied 16 shots while the Blue Devils outshot the Tigers with shots on goal nine to seven. The game went into halftime with a scoreless tie, but it was the away team who converted on a corner kick in the 72nd minute to break the deadlock. Evellyn Borges took the kick and both teams scrambled for the ball right in front of the Blue Devil net. Helene Braren was able to collect the ball and nick it by the Blue Devil defenders and goalkeeper to take the lead. KCKCC had no answer and received their first loss of the season in their 20th game.

With the loss, the Blue Devils will have to wait until Nov. 12 to see if they earn an "at large bid" to the NJCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship since they did not receive the automatic bid by winning the Plains District Tournament. The national tournament will be held Nov.17 to 23 at the Scheels Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kan.
