Jacks Drop Heartbreaker in Overtime to Thunderbirds

The Lumberjack Women's Basketball team went back and forth with United Tribes Technical College Monday night before eventually falling 73-70 in overtime.

The Jacks got off to a hot start jumping out to a 16-4 lead in the first quarter. However, in the final three and a half minutes of the first quarter the Thunderbirds outscored the Jacks 7-3 to cut the deficit at the quarter break to 19-11. In the second quarter the Jacks would struggle to get their offense going being out scored 16-6. At the halftime break DCB trailed 27-25.

Over the final two quarters the game would go back and forth with neither team able to get more than a two-possession lead.  With 2:45 to play Kiara Comeaux would convert on a layup and get fouled to put DCB up 62-60.  A pair of UTCC free throws would tie the game with two minutes remaining. Over the next handful of possessions both teams would come up empty. The Jacks would get the last possession, and Comeaux's runner in the lane would miss off rim sending the teams to overtime.  

The Thunderbirds opened the extra period with a wing three to put them on top. Day Whitehawk answered right back with a three of her own. UTTC grabbed the lead back on a shot in the lane on the next possession. Later in the overtime Whitehawk had a three pointer rim out that would have given DCB the lead. Two free throws stretched the T-birds lead to four at 69-65. BrandeeRhae Mays would knock down a 3-pointer from the top of the key to cut the lead to 69-68. UTTC pushed the lead back to three at 71-68 with 40 seconds remaining. On the ensuing Jacks possession Comeaux got a tough shot to fall bring DCB back within one. DCB got a needed stop on the defensive end but gave up an offensive rebound and had to foul. UTTC converted both free throws to take a three-point lead with 7.6 seconds left. The Jacks turned the ball over on their final possession and UTTC dribbled out the clock to take the 73-70 victory.

Amari Butler led all scorers and four Lumberjacks in double figures with 18 points. Comeaux scored 14 and posted her third triple-double of the season with 11 rebounds and 10 assists. Terayna Tapija-Jones dropped in 12, and Serinity Soland finished with 11. Ronessa Sazue led UTTC with 15 points.

DCB falls to 12-14 overall and 4-8 inside the Mon-Dak. The Jacks return home to close out the regular season on Sunday and Monday hosting Miles Community College at 1:00p.m. Sunday and Dawson Community College on Sophomore night Monday at 5:30p.m.
