
Softball suffers pair of losses on final day of CSN Coyote Kickoff Classic
YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Softball team (1-3) wrapped up play in the CSN Coyote Kickoff Classic in Henderson, Nev., on Saturday afternoon by dropping a pair of games, losing 9-1 to No. 10 ranked Salt Lake and 14-4 to Pima.
Autumn Arriola drove in the Matadors' lone run in the 9-1 loss to Salt Lake to open play Saturday afternoon, going 1-for-2 with her third home run of the season and third in the last two games.
Salt Lake scored a run in the first inning before the Matadors tied the game at 1-1 with the Arriola homer before the Bruins went on to score eight runs, plating three in the fourth inning and ending the game with five in the fifth.
Hannah Love picked up the only other hit the Matadors were able to put on the board in the loss, going 1-for-1.
Stephany Montoya went 2-for-2 with an RBI while Natalie Pinon finished 1-for-2 with a RBI in the Matadors' 14-4 loss to Pima.
Pima jumped out to an 8-0 lead thanks to a seven-run inning in the third. The Matadors put a run on the board in the third but Pima answered with two more in the top of the fourth.
Arizona Western pulled to within seven runs at 10-3 thanks to RBI singles from Montoya and Love. After the Matadors put a run on the board in the fifth inning, Pima scored four runs in the seventh to cap off the scoring.
The Matadors return home to host the Great Western Shootout on Thursday, January 30, taking on Scottsdale at noon at the Pacific Avenue Athletic Complex.
