Myatt homers twice, No. 8 Walters State defeats Cleveland State 9-5

CLEVELAND, TN – Tyler Myatt hit two two-run home runs for No. 8 Walters State on Tuesday against Cleveland State, and the Senators went on for a 9-5 win.

With the victory, the Senators improved to 33-5-1 overall and have won 13 games in a row.

Myatt hit his first two-run bomb of the game in the third inning to give the Senators a 3-1 lead. Then, with Walters State trailing 5-4 in the eighth, Myatt gave the Senators the lead for good with another two-run homer.

Along with Myatt, Nate Conner had four hits and an RBI while Jack Vogele had three hits and two RBIs. Jack Torbett had three hits as well, and Taylor Harris picked up two RBIs.

On the mound, seven pitchers took the mound for Walters State. Reilly Byers got the start and threw three innings, allowing one run on one hit while striking out two. Justin Bell was next in line with a scoreless fourth-inning, and Lorenzo Atwell struck out two in a scoreless inning.

Brady Scott was next on the mound and got the first two outs of the sixth-inning, allowing one run on two hits, before Mason Trucks threw 0.2 innings and allowed two runs on one hit. Jace Kirby (1-0) relieved Trucks with an out in the seventh and threw the next 1.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits. Matthew Porchas closed things out with a scoreless ninth-inning to secure the win.

Walters State got the scoring started in the top of the first as Kole Fenton was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a groundout, to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single by Vogele.

Cleveland State tied the game with a run in the second, but Walters State picked up three more in the third on a Myatt two-run home run and a Harris sacrifice fly that scored Carson Cabbage to make it 4-1.

That was the score until the sixth when Cleveland State picked up a run and then scored three more in the seventh to go up 5-4. Needing a response, the Senators got it from Myatt who smacked his second two-run homer of the game to give Walters State a 6-5 advantage.

In the ninth, the Senators got some insurance as Harris hit a sacrifice fly to score Drew Blalock, Conner doubled home Torbett and Vogele doubled in Conner to make it 9-5.
