Softball gets a pair of wins over Sandburg with comeback in game two as highlight

March 25, 2025 - The Kishwaukee College Softball team hosted Carl Sandburg College Tuesday in an Arrowhead Conference doubleheader.  Kish defeated the Chargers in 5 innings 9-0 in game one.  Kish got on the board in the first inning after Ana-Kate Phillips hit a solo home run to left field.  The Kougs added one run in the second, aided by a Sandburg error, making the score 2-0. Then Kishwaukee added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning on two hits. Reilee Suter hit a solo home run to center field, and a wild pitch scored one run.  The Kougars put the game away by scoring five runs in the fourth inning.  Phillips hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run, Kailey Goetz doubled, scoring one run, Kyra Johnson singled, scoring two runs, and Haley Von Schnase doubled, scoring one run.  Alyssa Wilkerson earned the win for the Kougars. The starting pitcher gave up four hits and zero runs over five innings, striking out six and walking none. Kish amassed 11 hits in the game. Goetz led with three hits in three at bats. Johnson and Phillips each drove in two runs each while Laila Anderson and Suter each collected multiple hits.

As quick as the first game lead developed quickly for a win for the Kougs, game two was the exact opposite as Kishwaukee had to rally from an 8-0 deficit in the second ininng. Ana-Kate Phillips collected three hits in five at bats to help lead the comeback and a 12-8 eventual win and sweep of Sandburg. Phillips hit a solo home run to left field in the sixth inning, doubled in the fourth inning, and singled in the first inning. Kish made the score 8-2 in the bottom of the second inning when Haley Von Schnase hit a solo home run to center field, and Reilee Suter singled, scoring one run.  Then the Kougars flipped the game on its head in the bottom of the sixth, scoring six runs on five hits to take the lead, 12-8. The biggest blow in the inning was a solo home run to left field by Phillips that drove in one. Kyra Johnson stepped in the circle for game two for Kishwaukee. The starter surrendered 11 hits and four earned over five innings, striking out three and walking one. Alyssa Wilkerson tossed two innings of no-run ball for Kish in relief. The right-handed pitcher allowed zero hits, striking out two and walking two.  Overall in the game, Kishwaukee Kougars accumulated 16 hits in the game. Lilli Delhotal and Phillips each collected three hits as teammates Bella Koertner and Von Schnase each collected multiple hits. Tyra Smith added an RBI.

Kishwaukee (9-7 overall, 2-2 Arrowhead Conference) will travel to at Sauk Valley Community College on Thursday then return home to face Kankakee CC Saturday at noon first game.
