In their first Skyway Conference game of the season, the Cyclones battled with College of Lake County, falling 77-63.
For the first half, play was tight as both teams were within reach of the other. Jadea Johnson and Deniza Fuentes scored all 14 points, trailing the Lancers by one at the end of the first quarter. It was more of the same in the second quarter with the Lancers holding a slim lead and the Cyclones down 32-31 at halftime.
What made the difference in the second half were free throws. The Lancers went 11-for-13 from the line while the Cyclones had too many missed opportunities. That helped Lake County outscore Moraine Valley both quarters. Some drives in the final minutes from Johnson, Shakila Brownlow and Robin Stevenson brought them within four but a string of fouls by the Cyclones and free throws from the Lancers led to the loss.
Johnson led with 18 points followed by Fuentes with 13 (12 of which were from three-pointers) and Brownlow with 13.
