Jacks Finish 6th at Mon-Dak Tipoff

The Lumberjack Women's Basketball team opened their season at the Mon-Dak Tipoff Tournament in New Town, ND this past weekend. The Lumberjacks finished 1-2 and took 6th at the tournament.

88-82 loss to Lake Region State College

Both teams struggled to get their offenses going early in the first quarter as two and a half minutes into the game Lake Region held a 4-2 lead. Lake Region started to find a grove on the offensive side of the ball knocking down multiple three pointers. At the end of the first quarter LRSC led DCB 28-18. The Jacks would get the offense rolling for themselves with a big quarter from Terayna Tapija-Jones who scored 19 points in the first half. However, due to the long ball the Royals went into the locker room with a 4937 lead. In the second half the Jacks went on a 12-3 run to get the Royals lead down to single digits but foul trouble prevented the Jacks from coming all the way back. LRSC would win the game by a final score of 88-82. Tapija-Jones led the Jacks and all scorers with 30 points she also had 10 rebounds for a double-double. She was joined in double figures by Amari Butler who added 16 points. Kiara Comeaux and Day Whitehawk each had 11. Sydney Schwabe led the Royals with 24.

85-59 win over Miles Community College

In Saturday's game the Jacks got their offense going thanks to their defenses. DCB forced 20 first half turnovers by the Pioneers including six steals from Butler. Offensively the Jacks were led by Tapija-Jones with 19 first half points and Butler who had 17. DCB took a 42-26 lead into the locker room. DCB continued the dominance on the defensive side of the ball forcing 15 more turnovers and racking up 23 steals as a team. In the end the Jacks would win by a final score of 85-59. Tapija-Jones led all scorers with 35 points and 12 rebounds, 10 of those being offensive for another double-double. Butler joined her in double figures with 22 points, she was one steal shy of a double-double. Comeaux added 12 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. Skyler Neumann led the Pioneers with 17.

91-82 loss to Bismarck State

The 5th place game was very eventually contested both the Jacks and the Mystic each had a long scoring run in the first half, but after twenty minutes the teams were tied at 42-42. Butler paced the Jacks with 15 points. The third quarter was just like the first two after thirty minutes the Mystics held a one-point lead at 60-59. The Mystics would take control of the game in the fourth quarter with a 15-2 run stretching their lead to 86-72. The Jacks would start to dig themselves out of a 14-point hole but ran out of time falling 91-82. Butler led all scorers with 25 points, Tapija-Jones and Comeaux joined her in double figures with 22 and 19 points respectively. Aleah McPhearson led the Mystics with 21 points.

After the weekend the Jacks sit at 1-2 overall these games do not go towards the teams Mon-Dak record. Up next they hit the road to take on Mesabi Range and Rainy River Friday and Saturday.  Game times are set for 5:00p.m and 11:00a.m. respectively.
