Delta College Falls Short in Hard-Fought Battle Against Hocking College, 97-86
Delta College's men's basketball team put up a valiant effort on the road at Pioneer Gym on November 26 but ultimately fell to Hocking College in a high-scoring showdown, 97-86. Despite strong individual performances and a sharp shooting night from beyond the arc, the Pioneers were unable to overcome the relentless attack of Hocking's Treshawn Cody, who delivered a career-best 45 points.
Sophomore guard Jayden Hackett was the standout performer for Delta, leading the team with 26 points, including six three-pointers that kept the Pioneers within striking distance throughout the game. Hackett's offensive firepower was complemented by reserve player Evan Booker, who added 19 points off the bench while shooting an impressive 6-for-8 from the free-throw line.
Delta College shot a commendable 46.2% from the field and 36.7% from three-point range, slightly edging Hocking in perimeter accuracy. However, turnovers and second-chance opportunities created by Hocking's defensive intensity proved costly. The Pioneers committed 11 turnovers, which Hocking converted into crucial points to maintain their lead.
In addition to Hackett and Booker, Willie Humphrey made his presence felt in the paint, scoring 10 points and pulling down seven rebounds. Guard Jaylen Carter contributed five rebounds and four assists, showcasing the balanced team effort.
While the Pioneers displayed strong offensive execution, they struggled to contain Hocking's Cody, whose dominant 15-for-22 shooting night was the deciding factor.
The game was marked by physicality, with both teams receiving technical fouls – Delta's Evan Booker and Hocking's Tabari Howard. Despite these moments of tension, Delta College showed resilience and poise, fighting to stay within reach until the final buzzer.
Delta College now turns its attention to the next matchup, where they'll look to regroup and build on the positives from this game.
The Pioneers return to action on Wednesday, December 4, where they'll aim to secure a victory and continue their pursuit of a successful season.
