No. 14 Walters State sweep Alpena Community College, 19-2 and 8-0

MORRISTOWN, TN – No. 14 Walters State picked up two wins on Monday, taking down Alpena Community College 19-2 and 8-0. 

With the wins, the Senators improved to 20-4-1 overall.

GAME ONE: No. 14 Walters State 19, Alpena Community College 2 (5 Innings)

In game one of the day, the Senators scored 15 runs in the first two innings and went on for the win.

At the plate, Tyler Myatt smacked two home runs and drove in four runs. Jack Vogele and Hayden Blair each homered as well, while Kenny Cox had three hits. 

On the mound, Reilly Byers got the start and threw two innings. Byers allowed two runs, one earned, on one hit and struck out three. After Ryan Smith threw the next inning, allowing one hit and striking out two, Justin Bell threw a scoreless fourth. Andrew Moore (2-0) threw the final inning, striking out the side. 

Alpena got on the board with a run in the top of the first, but Walters State answered with nine runs in the bottom half. Those runs came on a Vogele three-run home run, a Myatt solo homer, a passed ball that scored Holden Pantier, a Drew Blalock RBI single, a passed ball that scored Blalock and a two-RBI double by Kole Fenton that made it 9-1. 

Alpena got a run back in the top of the second, but the Senators scored six more in the bottom half to go up 15-2. Cox got things started with an RBI double, and a fielder's choice scored Cox. Taylor Harris made it 13-2 with a two-RBI double, and Myatt made it 15-2 with a two-RBI single. 

The Senators picked up a run in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly by Harris that drove home Blair, and the Senators final three runs came in the bottom of the fourth on a Myatt solo home run and a Blair two-run homer that made it 19-2. 

GAME TWO: No. 14 Walters State 8, Alpena Community College 0

In game two, five Walters State pitchers combined to throw a five-hit shutout.

Riley Franklin got the start in the game, throwing one inning and striking out one. Tyler Peterson (1-0) threw the second inning, striking out one, and Ryder Moye pitched a scoreless third inning. After Lorenzo Atwell struck out two in the fourth, Dakota Crumbley pitched the final three innings. Crumbley allowed just one hit and struck out five. 

At the plate, Nate Conner had three hits, one being a homer, and drove in three runs. Myatt hit his third home run of the day as well, while Blalock homered and drove in two runs.

The Senators got on the board in the first with three runs, as Conner singled in Jack Torbett, a fielder's choice scored Conner and a fielder's choice scored Walker Morgan. The Senators added two more runs in the second on an RBI double by Conner and a sacrifice fly by Myatt and made it 6-0 in the fourth on a solo home run by Conner.

The final two runs came in the fifth inning as Myatt and Blalock each smacked solo home runs.

Walters State will be back in action on Wednesday, traveling to Cleveland Community College. The nine-inning game will begin at 1 pm.
