  • Bears shoot 49 percent in the win

A traditional three-point play from sophomore Da'Shon Fisher of Iowa City with 17.7 seconds left and a free throw by sophomore Demerius Shakur of Milwaukee, Wis., with five seconds remaining lifted the DMACC men's basketball team to a 94-92 win over Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) January 15 at Council Bluffs.

The Bears got 21 points from Fisher and 20 from sophomore Trevian Carson of Des Moines as they improved to 17-2 for the season and 7-1 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) with their fifth consecutive victory.

IWCC, which fell to 12-7 overall and 5-4 in the ICCAC, had an eight-point advantage at the half, 49-41, and led throughout the second half, including a 10-point lead at 74-64 with just more than 10 minutes to play.

The Reivers were ahead 76-69 before an 17-4 run got DMACC an 86-80 lead with 3 minutes, 16 seconds left. A pair of three-pointers from IWCC's DaCarter Coleman gave the Reivers an 86-86 tie with 2:10 remaining and neither team left by more than two points the rest of the way.

The game was tied at 90 with 1:13 left and IWCC broke that tie behind two free throws by Jadon Cool with 33 seconds left. Fisher tied the game at 92 on a jump shot with 16 seconds remaining. He was fouled on the shot and made the free throw to put the Bears ahead 93-92. IWCC missed a game-tying shot with five seconds and Shakur grabbed the rebound, was fouled and made one of two free throws to close out the scoring. A desperation three-pointer from IWCC's Daleron Thomas failed to drop.

DMACC shot 49 percent from the field, making 29 of 59 field goal attempts. The Bears were 5-of-22 from three-point range and 31-of-36 from the free throw line.

IWCC hit 32 of 63 field goal attempts for 51 percent shooting. The Reivers made 11 of 28 shots from beyond the arc and went 17-of-24 at the free throw line.

IWCC had a 33-32 advantage on the boards with Fisher's nine rebounds leading DMACC. Shakur and freshman Jaden Jefferson of Forney, Texas, had five rebounds apiece and Carson and freshman Andrew Austin of Rock Rapids grabbed four apiece. Shakur led the Bears in assists with five and Carson had a team-high three steals.

The DMACC men's basketball team will play Ellsworth Community College (ECC) Jan. 18. Game time is 3 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium. ECC is 15-4 overall and 5-3 in the ICCAC.
