FORT MYERS, Fla.- The #2 Florida SouthWestern State Buccaneers continued their domination in the circle on Saturday, throwing their sixth and seventh consecutive games allowing two or less runs in 2-0 and 3-1 wins over #13 Daytona State to improve to a perfect 20-0 on the year.
Zoe Yzaguirre took the ball for the Bucs in the circle in game one looking to build off of her nine inning complete game shutout Tuesday against #10 Seminole State. She did just that early on, striking out the side in the top of the 1st to give the Bucs a chance to take an early lead on the Falcons.
Noelani Livingstone walked to start the Bucs half of the 1st and moved to third on a single from Skylar Brennan. She scored on a passed ball and Brennan did the same on an RBI groundout from Virginia Mambelli to stake the Bucs out to a 2-0 lead after one.
Daytona got something going in the 2nd as Yzaguirre hit a pair of batters and allowed a single to load the bases, but she dialed up three more strikeouts to get out of the jam and keep the Bucs in front 2-0.
Daytona got a leadoff double in the 3rd but couldn't turn it into anything and the Bucs stranded a runner at third as well in the inning to send the game to the 4th with FSW still leading 2-0.
Yzaguirre struck out two in the 4th and two more in the 5th to keep FSW in front 2-0, but the Bucs couldn't get anything going on offense and it remained a two run game to the 6th.
Neither team scored in the 6th and the game flew to the 7th with FSW still clinging to the 2-0 lead.
Daytona got a leadoff single in the 7th to bring the tying run to the plate but Yzaguirre dialed up her 12th and 13th strikeouts of the game before getting a fly out to center to seal up the 2-0 shutout win.
Yzaguirre ran her scoreless innings streak to 20 with the shutout victory, improving to 8-0 on the year allowing just four hits while tying her career high with 13 strikeouts. Brennan had the only FSW hit in the victory.
Game two followed a similar script to game one as Leah Meyer took the rubber for FSW. Meyer fired a 1-2-3 top of the 1st with a pair of strikeouts and again the Bucs plated a pair of first inning runs, this time thanks in part to three Daytona State errors to take an early 2-0 lead.
Livingstone laid down a perfect two out bunt to bring home a run in the 2nd and motored around to an unoccupied second base for a rare bunt double to make it 3-0 Buccaneers.
The Bucs allowed their first run in 30 innings in the 4th as Daytona sliced a leadoff triple down the right field line and brought the run home with a groundout to second to trim the FSW lead to 3-1 after four.
Meyer wouldn't allow anything else as she worked a 1-2-3 top of the 5th and pitched around her own error in the 6th for a scoreless frame to keep it 3-1. She didn't give the Falcons any hope in their final at bats, retiring Daytona in order to finish what she started in a 3-1 victory for FSW.
The game featured just six total hits, three a side. Meyer went the distance, allowing just three hits and one run while striking out six to improve to 5-0 on the year in the circle.
The Bucs improve to 20-0 to start a year for the second time in program history while finishing the first week of Citrus Conference play a perfect 6-0 to get out to the early conference lead. Daytona sees a nine game winning streak come to a screeching halt as they drop to 18-4 overall and even up their Citrus Conference mark at 2-2.
The wins for the Bucs sets up an epic regular season showdown Tuesday in Fort Pierce when FSW travels to take on Indian River in a matchup of the last four NJCAA National Champions and the top two teams in the last NJCAA National Rankings.
