4 Homers Launch Thunderbirds to Victory Over Wranglers

The NMJC baseball team defeated Odessa College 10-2 Monday afternoon in a non-conference matchup. 

Sophomore Jorge De Los Santos led off the game with a solo homer to set the tone and give NMJC a 1-0 lead. Odessa put two runs across in the bottom of the first to grab a 2-1 advantage.

First baseman Lane Arroyos tied the game at 2-2 with a leadoff homer in the top of the third. NMJC scored two more runs on a wild pitch and an error on a pop fly by Casen Savage to end the inning in front 4-2. NMJC tacked on another run in the fourth on an RBI single by Julius Ramirez.

The Thunderbirds scored two runs in the seventh via a bases loaded walk and a hit by pitch to make the score 7-2. Jeter Battles hit a 2-run jack in the top of the eighth that put NMJC ahead 9-2. Lachlan Maude hit the fourth and final long ball in the top of the ninth making the score 10-2 NMJC which proved to be the final tally.   

Second baseman Jorge De Los Santos went 2-for-4 with a double and a homer. The Saginaw, Texas native scored two runs, recorded an RBI, and two walks in the win.

Third baseman Jeter Battles was 1-for-3 with two RBIs, two runs scored, and a home run. Lachlan Maude was 1-for-3 with a solo homer and two walks. Julius Ramirez drove in two runs in the win. 

The Thunderbirds finished with nine hits on the day. Donovan Becerra started the game going one inning and allowing two earned runs on four hits. Five different relievers came into the game allowing just three hits and no runs over the next eight innings. Dominick Maese earned the win after lasting 2.2 innings and giving up only one hit.

The Thunderbirds finished the afternoon with nine hits.

NMJC improves to 10-6 on the season and will travel to Waco, Texas for a 3-game set against No. 7 McLennan Community College Feb. 28 - March 1 starting at 3 p.m. CST.
