The Lakeland baseball team continued its play at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach and ran into a buzz saw today against the Middlesex College Colts. The Lakers dropped both ends of the doubleheader today by the scores of 14-2 and 11-1. In game 1, the Lakers fell behind 2-0 in the top of the 2nd inning before cutting into the lead with a run of their own in the home half of the inning. James LaVigne got the inning started with a single and then advanced to second base on a wild pitch. LaVigne would advance to 3rd on a single by Josiah Cuesta before scoring on an RBI-double from Wilfredo Ortiz. Unfortunately for the Lakers, the Colts would then score 10 runs over the next two innings to blow the game open and take the game. Lakeland would add a run in the 5th inning when Cody Crawford tripled and later scored on an RBI-single form LaVigne.
James LaVigne went 3-3 in the game with an RBI while Wilfredo Ortiz went 2-3 (2B) with an RBI. Cody Crawford (3B), Brayden Fellouzis (2B), and Josiah Cuesta had the other hits for Lakeland. Kaden Stout started on the mound and pitched 2.1 innings while allowing 5 runs (3 earned) and striking out 4 batters. Thomas Vokic relieved and was charged with 7 runs (6 earned) over 1.2 innings before Nathan Hawkins finished the game pitching 1 inning and allowing 2 earned runs.
In game 2, the teams were tied until the Colts erupted for 7 runs in the 4th inning. It was a hole the Lakers could not climb out of as they dropped game 2. Lakeland scored their only run in the 5th inning when Ray Cowen led off with a walk and then stole second base. Cowen would advance to 3rd base on a grounder from Thomas Vokic that the Colts could not handle. Miguel Fuentes would then single home Cowen for the Lakers lone run.
Lakeland managed just 4 hits in the nightcap. Tony Hall went 2-2 for the Lakers while Miguel Fuentes and Cody Crawford picked up the other hits. Leo Alonso started on the mound for the Lakers and was charged with 7 runs over 3.2 innings of work. Logan Metz relieved and surrendered 3 runs (2 earned) in .1 innings. Lucas Nichols finished out the game allowing an unearned run in .2 innings.
Next Up: On Monday, the Lakers will travel to Florence-Darlington Technical College to face the Stingers. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
