Darius Williams leads MCC over Montcalm with 23 points
February 18, 2025
The Jayhawks defeated the Montcalm Centurions 77-65 in conference play on Monday night thanks to a dominant first half. The Jayhawks outscored the Centurions 41-23 in the first half and managed to hold their three leading scorers to a combined six points. The Jayhawks first half offense was productive as well, shooting 47.1% from the field and 42.9% from behind the arc. But the Centurions did not go away in the second half and an offensive surge off their bench from guard Jack Ruggles erased most of the gap between Montcalm and Muskegon. The Jayhawks led by only seven points with just under three minutes to play following a Montcalm layup. The Jayhawks were fouled on the next possession, and sophomore guard Kevon Washington made both of his free throws to extend the lead to eight. The Jayhawks forced a stop on the Centurions the next possession and were then fouled, leading to game sealing free throws and the win. Sophomore guard Darius Williams did it all in the win against Montcalm, scoring 23 points, grabbing eight rebounds, dishing out four assists, notching three steals and two blocks. Sophomore guard Will Chye completed a double-double performance with 16 points and ten rebounds. All five starters scored ten or more points for the Jayhawks. The win moves the Jayhawks record to 15-10 and 8-3 in conference play, clinching at least a third-place finish in the conference. The Jayhawks' next matchup against Mid Michigan College, the only undefeated team and sole leader in the conference. The matchup is scheduled for Wednesday, February 19th at Bartels-Rhode Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
