Spartan Men Hold Off Rainy River for 88-84 Win at Central Lakes Classic
M State led 43-36 over Minnesota North College-Rainy River at the half on Saturday and then had to hold off a strong comeback attempt by the Voyageurs in the second half to record an 88-84 victory at the Central Lakes Classic in Brainerd. The win improved the Spartans record to 12-1 to start the season.
M State hit 53.3% (32-60) of their field goal attempts and was quite efficient from 3-point range, hitting 13-of-29 (44.8%). They also went 11-for-15 (73.3%) from the free throw line. The Spartans had a 31-25 advantage on the boards
Four players reached double digits, led by Yonis Mohamud with 26 points. Javin Tindall registered a double-double (21 points, 17 rebounds), as did Mason Muir (12 points, 10 assists). Foday Sheriff had a solid all-around floor game with 19 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists.
Rainy River shot 52.5% (32-61) overall and 41.4% (12-29) on 3's. They were led by Rodney Mozard (24 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists) and Austin Howe (22 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists). Srdan Vujnovic came off the bench to supply 15 points and Samuel Jideofor was also in double figures with 11 points.
M State will host the Spartan Classic on Monday, December 30 and Tuesday, December 31. They will face Minnesota North College – Itasca on Monday at 7:30pm and Leech Lake Tribal College on Tuesday at 5:00pm
