
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 8-ranked Johnson County baseball completed a four-game series sweep by taking the final two games of the series Saturday afternoon at the JCCC Baseball Complex. The Cavaliers had to come-from-behind to post an 11-10 victory in the opening game then flew past the Scotties in the second winning 14-1.
With the sweep Johnson County improved to 21-6 overall and to 8-0 in conference play.
In the opener, JCCC rallied for the victory despite trailing 10-4 after giving up eight runs in the top of the fifth inning.
In the Cavaliers pulled to within two runs in the bottom half of the fifth a three-run blast from sophomore outfielder Bo Shinkle and a solo shot from sophomore outfielder Ryker Edwards.
An inning later Johnson County loaded the bases with no outs. Edwards and sophomore first baseman Easton Roe each drove in a run and Edwards scored the game winner off a Scotties fielding error. Edwards also had a triple and scored in the second and drove in a run in JCCC three-run third inning.
Johnson County used five pitchers in the game. Freshman left-hander Ashton Hartwig hurled a scoreless sixth inning to pick up the win and freshman right-hander logged a scoreless seventh to earn his first save of the season.
The second game was all Johnson County. The Cavaliers had the came in hand after the third scoring five in the second and four in the third. They added a single run in the fourth and two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings for a 14-1 victory.
Shinkle drove in four runs highlight by another three-run homer over the right field fend in the second innings.
Edwards also drove in four runs off two hits and freshman catcher Boston Bruce was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and two driven in.
Freshman right-hander Denton Biller earned the complete game victory, allowing one unearned run off one hit with seven strikeouts over seven innings pitched.
Johnson County will return to the diamond on Thursday, March 20, when they host No. 9-ranked Cowley College. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
