YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Men's Basketball team (10-4) won its second straight game at the Chapman Automotive Christmas Classic, beating Grand Canyon University Club 71-60 on Wednesday night at the House Gymnasium.
Kaleb Myers led the Matadors in scoring, scoring 14 points and hauling in 10 rebounds to finish the game as one of two Matadors to record double-digit rebounds and one of four to score in double-figures in the win.
The Matadors raced out to a 14-7 lead in the first half and led by as many as 12 points on a pair of Edwin Suarez free throws. Arizona Western outscored the Lopes 33-23 in the first half before Grand Canyon chipped away in the second half, whittling the Matadors' lead down to two points. Arizona Western held the Lopes off thanks to a nine-point second half from Darnell Childs who finished the game with 11 points.
Matt Anglo was the Matadors' second-leading scorer, scoring 12 points while Cam Atkinson added 11 off the bench in the win.
The Matadors return to the court to wrap up the semester on Friday, taking on Laramie County in the final game of the Chapman Automotive Christmas Classic at 1:00 pm at the House Gymnasium. Tickets are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for seniors while Arizona Western College students get in free with their AWC ID.
