The DMACC volleyball team took Kirkwood Community College (KCC) to five sets before dropping a 3-2 decision to the Eagles in the semifinals of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region 11 Volleyball Tournament November 9 at Cedar Rapids, ending the season for the Bears.
KCC, the tournament's No. 1 seed and ranked third in the NJCAA Division II poll, won by set scores of 17-25, 25-22, 29-27, 16-25, 15-4. DMACC, seeded fourth, came into the match ranked 24th in the NJCAA Division II poll.
Sophomore Abbi Brenizer of Norwalk led DMACC with 17 kills and freshman Jaelynne Clarke of Alliance, Neb., finished with 11. The Bears hit .140 with 47 kills from 171 attacks with 43 attack errors.
Sophomore Halia Mahi of Cedar Falls led DMACC in assists with 35 and sophomore Emma Jones of Readlyn topped five players in double figures in digs with 27. Sophomore Lexie Lane of Renwick had 23 digs, Mahi came away with 21 and freshman Lauren Sandvold of Cedar Falls and Clarke had 15 and 14 digs respectively.
Freshman Emma Liechti of Ankeny led the Bears in blocks with four block assists and Brenizer had three blocks, including two solo blocks.
The DMACC volleyball team closed the season at 23-18. The Bears were 8-3 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC), finishing fourth behind KCC at 11-0, Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) at 9-2 and Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC), also at 8-3.
