
Cougars Lose Lead at Volunteer State
Halfway through the game Cleveland State led 5-1, but Volunteer State scored nine unanswered runs on their way to victory.
Adam Baker pitched five innings allowing two earned runs on five hits while striking out five and walking four for the Cougars. The bullpen combined to pitch three innings allowing eight runs, seven of those earned, on six hits while striking out two and walking eight batters.
The Pioneers patience at the plate and timely hitting helped charge the comeback along with winning pitcher Drew Morehead (3-0) throwing the final 2.1 innings allowing no earned runs on one hit while striking out two and walking a batter.
Cleanup batter and left fielder Gage Hoover homered and drove in four of Volunteer State's runs while leadoff batter and second baseman Drew Plummer hit home another three.
For Cleveland State (14-15, 8-8) second baseman Brogan Jones went 2-4 at the plate hitting a triple, scoring a run and driving one in. Catcher Ty Denton and third baseman Evan Goins each had an R.B.I.
Games two and three of the series are tomorrow at Volunteer State (23-9, 7-7) with first pitch of the double header scheduled for 1 p.m.
