The Marian University Ancilla Men's Basketball team is fighting for a high seed in the upcoming MCCAA conference tournament in three weeks, but Saturday they were able to take the time to honor their Sophomores before their matchup with Glen Oaks. In that game, the Chargers won each half, 44-39, but in a tight game late, they utilized a 12-2 run to help close out the game and secure their 7th MCCAA victory of the season.
The Chargers are now in second place in the Western Division, trailing only Kalamazoo Valley by a couple of games. In Saturday's contest, Freshman guard Jordan Woods stood out once again, creating offense for himself and others in the way of 24 points on 9-16 shooting, plus he dished out 12 assists to teammates. Sophomore wing Dante Porch came off the bench to produce 22 points on 8-13 shooting, he was 5-8 from long range, and he collected 8 rebounds.
Freshman guard Matt King tossed in 18 points and added 4 assists to his tally, while Sophomore forward Jayden Sanders contributed 16 points and 9 rebounds to the winning effort. All in all, the Chargers impressively assisted on 22 of their 32 made field goal attempts.
Here is what Head Coach Aaron Butcher had to say about his team, and his Sophomores, "we are on a nice little run and have figured out how to win five in a row. I'm not sure if we can Kalamazoo, but we are going to try. We still have one more meeting with them, too. During this stretch, we have done it shooting the ball well, playing great defense, out-rebounding our opponents...really in different ways each time. And these Sophomores...they have been great contributors for us, whether that's putting up numbers on the court or being student-athletes off the court. They have been enjoyable to coach this year."
The Men's Basketball team is back in action Wednesday when they travel to Lansing Community College to take on the Stars. They will follow the Women's game, so tip time is at approximately 7:30 p.m. Please come out and support the Chargers, if you are able!!
