
(Sugar Grove, IL) – Waubonsee Community College's men's basketball team trounced the College of Lake County on Tuesday evening in Erickson Hall Gymnasium. The Chiefs (16-1, 3-0) blew out the Lancers (6-10, 1-2) in the second half to coast to a 97-55 Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) victory. The 13thranked Chiefs extended their winning streak to 16 games as they connected on 20 three-point shots for the game. Waubonsee also owned a 20-0 advantage in fast break points, a 30-2 edge in points off turnovers and the upper hand in bench points 45-8. All 11 Chiefs' players who stepped on the court scored at least four points or more in the game, while Waubonsee outscored Lake County 58-28 in the second half.
Zachariah Hayslett buried a pair of three-pointers from the right corner to get Waubonsee going early on. Moments later Pat Robinson took an offensive charge on defense for the Chiefs and Christian Meeks splashed a triple to give Waubonsee a 9-4 lead. A two-on-one fast break by the Lancers resulted in a two-handed power slam by Marcus Antoine as Lake County tried to keep pace. The Lancers' Emmanuel Willowghby then drilled a three to knot the score at 16-all after eight minutes of action. Hayslett broke the tie with his third trey of the game before Antoine got to the rim again, this time for a one-handed slam. The Chiefs held a slim 22-20 lead at the midway point of the first half, with seven three-point baskets and a free throw accounting for their 22 points. After the Lancers went in front by a point Waubonsee responded with an 8-0 blitz over the next 60 seconds to surge in front 30-23. Two minutes later Hayslett scored on a running one-hander in the lane to extend the Chiefs' lead to double digits. A short time later Aboubacar Sidibe flew in for a tip-in to help Waubonsee carry a 39-27 lead into the locker room.
Waubonsee's defense helped spur an 8-2 run to start the second half and push the lead up to 18 points at 47-29. A minute later Robinson drilled a three-pointer, the Chiefs' 10th long range basket of the game, to make it a 20-point lead. Not long afterwards Hayslett knocked down another triple to cap off a 28-6 Chiefs' run as the lead ballooned to 26 points. Coach Lance Robinson then cleared his bench with 13 minutes still to go in the game. Waubonsee's bench didn't miss a beat as Jermaine Theodore hit a high arching trey from the top of the key and Malik Petty nailed one of his own seconds later. Tylon Toliver connected on Waubonsee's 16th three-point basket as the lead reached 30 points midway through the second half. The Chiefs continued to have success from beyond the arc as they blew the game wide open with a 45-14 run through 14 minutes of second half action. Waubonsee led by as many as 43 points on several occasions in the final five minutes of play as JJ Strojinc nailed the Chiefs' 20th three-point basket with two minutes left in the game.
Sidibe led Waubonsee with 15 points, while Hayslett added 14 points to go along with six rebounds and three assists. Toliver chipped in with 13 points, and Meeks booked eight points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out six assists. Robinson added nine points, and James Parker tallied nine points to go with handing out six assists. The Chiefs are in action again this coming Thursday, January 16 when they travel to north suburban Des Plaines to battle Oakton College beginning at 7:15 p.m. The women's contest is set to begin at 5:15 p.m that evening. Waubonsee returns home this coming Saturday, January 18 when they host Harper College from Palatine. The women's game tips off at 1:00 p.m. (CDT) and the men's contest is set to start at 3:00 p.m.
