The River Wins Home Opener

FORT PIERCE, FL- Indian River extended its winning streak with a dominant 10-0 victory over Keiser University JV on Tuesday, January 28 in their home opener. The nationally ranked Pioneers have now won four straight games, allowing only two earned runs during that span.

The Pioneers took an early lead in the first inning when sophomore Jason Lashley grounded into a fielder's choice, bringing home the game's first run. The scoring continued in the third inning as Melbourne native Jake Weatherspoon singled to drive in one, followed by Maikol Lucena's deep sacrifice fly, marking his third RBI of the year. Offensive production was a key theme throughout the game, as the Pioneers scored in all but two innings, ultimately securing a mercy-rule victory in seven innings.

Indian River utilized five different pitchers, led by sophomore Michael Malone, who earned his first win of the season. The right-hander from Park Vista High School was dominant, not allowing a hit over two innings while striking out four. Jomari Philostin, Dylan Llanes, Sammy Beir, and Dane Rossi combined for five innings of relief, surrendering just two hits and striking out four.

Offensively, the Pioneers collected 10 hits. Rocco Depastino led the team with two RBIs from the eighth spot in the lineup. Matty Davis, Matt Lashley, and Jake Weatherspoon each contributed two hits.

Next up, Indian River heads to Panama City for the Panama City Classic this Friday, January 31.
