Cavaliers roll to win over Western Iowa Tech with balanced scoring and strong bench play

OVERLAND PARK, Kan – The No. 14-ranked Johnson County Community College men's basketball team remained unbeaten at home with an 89-47 victory last Friday night over Western Iowa Tech, avenging an early season loss to the Comets on the road. 

Bench play, rebounds and forced turnovers were key for the Cavaliers in the victory.  JCCC's bench outscored the Comets 43-to-11. As a team, JCCC outrebounded Western Iowa Tech 45-39 while forcing 19 turnovers.

Johnson County had a balanced scoring attack as all 12 players to touch the court for the Cavaliers scored, with nine players posting six or more points. Sophomore guard Steven Samuels hit 6-of-13 shots including two 3-pointers for game-high 14 points. He also had five rebounds and two steals. 

Freshman guard Joey Robinson followed with 12 points, five boards, two assists and two steals and sophomore guard Jordan Jenkins reached double digits for the first time with 10 points. 

Freshman forward Tavian Cruse was the top rebounder with 10 to go along with six points and sophomore forward Brandon Mann posted nine points, four steals, three rebounds and three assists. 

Other key performers were freshman forward Ron Taylor (8 points, 4 rebounds), sophomore forward Traeger Rader (7 points), freshman guard Gavin Harvey (6 points, 7 assists), freshman forward Taveon Vann (6 points, 3 rebounds, 2 blocks) and sophomore guard Ben Miller (6 points, 3 assists)

Juvares Safford led Western Iowa Tech with 14 points. 

Johnson County (11-2) returns to the hardwood on Friday, January 3 when then host Metropolitan Community College. Opening tip is scheduled for 6 p.m.
