A go-ahead basket was taken off the board in the final seconds as the Hornets fell to Corning in a back-and-forth contest on Tuesday.
The game was close throughout, as Corning held one-point leads after the first and second quarters. It was 21-20 at halftime, and the score was tied at 34-34 entering the fourth quarter.
With just under five minutes to play in the fourth, the Red Barons were again ahead by just one point, 43-42. Only eight total points were scored in the next four minutes, as Corning still held a one-point lead at 47-46 with one minute left.
The score remained 47-46 with 12.1 seconds left and the Hornets possessing the ball. Zephora Brouillette drove to the basket for SUNY Broome and converted what looked to be the go-ahead, if not game-winning layup. However, the basket was called off due to a traveling violation and the Red Barons got the ball back and closed out the game.
Lillian Monroe continued her recent strong stretch of scoring by going for a game-high 18 points. Sophia Ashman also had 15 points and six rebounds. Madeline Hyzer added 14 rebounds. Brouillette had 10 boards.
With the loss, Broome fell to 3-15 overall and just missed picking up its first conference win of the season. The Hornets will be at home again on Thursday to host Finger Lakes CC.
