Baseball Opens Season at Lake Michigan

STEVENSVILLE, Mich. – The Mid Michigan College baseball team (0-2) opened their season this past Friday (Feb. 28) with a pair of 7 inning games at Lake Michigan College. These were the first games under new head coach Danny Smith. 

Game 1:

Mid dropped a heartbreaker in the first game of the doubleheader, losing 9-8. The Lakers scored five runs in the top of the first inning, however the host Redhawks responded with two runs in both the first and second innings. Mid added another run in the top of the fifth to make it 6-4, but Lake Michigan responded with five runs in the bottom of fifth to take a 9-6 lead. Despite scoring two runs in the top of the seventh, the Lakers failed to complete the comeback. 

Brennan Hallman and Isiah Stoy each recorded a double, while Caleb Thomas recorded a triple. Thomas, Stoy, and Tyler Schultz had two hits each. Connor Bryan drew two walks, while Eddie McDonald and Chris Williams recorded stolen bases, with Williams stealing two. On the mound Brandon Williams (0-1) took the loss, while Luke Sherman and Donovan Heugh struck out three batters each. 

Game 2: 

The Lakers scored the first run of the contest in the top of the third inning, however that was the only lead they had as the Redhawks scored six runs in the bottom half of the third to blow the game open and earn the 10-2 victory. 

Williams and Schultz each had an RBI for the Lakers, while Corbin Reed (0-1) took the loss on the mound. James Kenney had a solid pitching outing for Mid with four strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work. Jacob Kowalski started the game on the mound for Mid and went 2.0 innings with three strikeouts and one walk.
