MCC’s Cory Wouters garners two national awards
McCook Community College sophomore baseball player Cory Wouters has racked up two national awards and one regional honor for his work over the weekend.
The National Junior College Athletic Association office in Charlotte, N.C., announced Wednesday that Wouters is the Division 1 national player of the week for Feb. 20-26. The Canadian Baseball Network also named the Saskatoon, Saskatchewan native its College Player of the Week; and the NJCAA's Region IX named Wouters as its Player of the Week (Feb. 18-Feb. 23).
In a 3-1 series win over Bismarck State in Pueblo, Colo., Wouters batted.714 (10-for-14) with three doubles, three home runs, seven runs scored, while driving in 10 runs. The
two-way player also started his first game as a pitcher this season and picked up a win, throwing four innings, giving up no hits, walking four and striking out 10. He also hit three home runs in that game, won by McCook 14-4.
At one point over the weekend, he reached base 13 consecutive times, finishing the week with a .765 on-base average and a 1.57 slugging average.
For the season, he's played in all nine games for the Indians batting .467 with an on-base average of .543 and is slugging 1.033. He has 14 hits in 30 at bats with five doubles, four home runs and 13 RBIs. He's leading Region IX with his four round-trippers, second in the hitting and tied for second in RBIs.
He's coming off a freshman season, where he was named the Region IX Freshman of the Year in 2024, second team all-Region IX as well as a first-team selection on the Omaha World-Herald's junior college all-Midlands baseball team. Wouters led MCC in hitting and was second in Region IX with a .416 batting average. He had 12 doubles, nine home runs and 44 RBIs in 52 games with a .468 on-base mark and a slugged .642. He also appeared in 11 games on the mound with four starts going 3-7 with an 8.71 ERA and 69 strikeouts in 41 innings.
MCC is scheduled for its home opener Friday against Northeast Community College (Norfolk), but because of last week's snow, that game may be pushed to Saturday to allow another day for the field to dry.
