ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.- The #13 Florida SouthWestern State Buccaneers secured their 20th win of the season Wednesday night on the road in St. Petersburg, controlling the pace in a 65-50 win over the St. Petersburg Titans in Citrus Conference play to improve to 20-4 on the year.
The Bucs got off to a bit of a slow start against the Titans, falling behind 14-13 after one quarter of action.
They dug their heels in on the defensive end to quickly erase the Titans lead and take a 31-23 lead into the break at half.
It was a group effort in the first half for FSW as all seven players who saw action got in the scoring column, led by Samantha Serrano with seven.
The Bucs and Titans went back and forth in the third, trading baskets to a 45-38 score after three.
FSW dominated the fourth as a three from Sarah Owona and a three point play from Ivy Brown gave them their largest lead of the game at 57-41 midway through the quarter before the Bucs finished off the Titans 65-50 at the final horn.
Three players scored in double figures for the Bucs, led by Owona who tied a career high with 16. Georgi Buzzetti was big on the inside for the Bucs, finishing with 14 points while FCSAA Player of the Week Asiana Britt had 13.
FSW wins their fifth straight to improve to 20-4 on the year, the third time in four seasons the Bucs have reached the 20 win mark. FSW moves to 14-1 in Citrus Conference play where they are just one win away from clinching the Conference Championship. St. Petersburg is eliminated from postseason consideration with the loss as they fall to 4-24 overall and 2-14 in league play.
The Bucs are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Gainesville to take on Santa Fe in a matinee tip.
