The Herkimer Generals Men's Lacrosse team went toe-to-toe with one of the nation's top programs on Wednesday but came up short in a 16-10 loss to No. 3 ranked Genesee Community College.
The Generals came out sharp, putting together a strong first quarter and taking a 5-4 lead behind a hot start from Eric Attleson. The sophomore attacker scored three times in the opening frame, and Herkimer matched Genesee's energy early. Ryan Hoyt and Jordan Fox each added goals to help the Generals set the tone.
But the Cougars responded in the second quarter, scoring five-of-six goals in the quarter and flipping the momentum heading into halftime. Herkimer kept battling in the second half, but Genesee's depth and ball movement proved too much as the Cougars pulled away.
Attleson finished with four goals and an assist to lead Herkimer's offense. Fox scored twice and added a helper, while Hoyt had a goal and three assists. Chris Rose chipped in with two goals, and Owen Pierce added one late in the fourth.
Genesee spread the scoring around, with Brian Freeman and James Reif leading the way. Despite the loss, Herkimer showed it could hang with elite competition, especially in the opening quarter and stretches of the second half.
The Generals will look to bounce back next Friday when they host Howard Community College at Wehrum Stadium. Face-off is set for 4 p.m.
