Robertson, Morgan shine on the mound in No. 9 Walters State’s doubleheader sweep of Dyersburg State

DYERSBURG, TN – Walker Morgan and Aiden Robertson were nearly untouchable on the mound Thursday afternoon against Dyersburg State, and No. 9 Walters State took 8-1 and 8-0 wins over the Eagles. 

With the victories, the Senators improved to 31-5-1 overall and 13-4 in TCCAA play. The Senators have now won 11 games in a row. 

GAME ONE: No. 9 Walters State 8, Dyersburg State 1

In game one, Morgan threw five perfect innings and the Senators pulled away with six runs in the seventh inning.

Morgan (5-0) threw six innings in the game, allowing just one run on two hits while striking out four. Rowan Park threw the final inning, striking out one. 

At the plate, Nate Conner went 3-3 and drove in three runs, while Jack Vogele had two hits and two RBIs. Tyler Myatt picked up two hits and an RBI, as well. 

The Senators struck first in the game in the top of the third, as Vogele singled and Kole Fenton came around to score on an error. Walters State made it 2-0 in the top of the fifth when Conner singled and scored Jack Torbett

Those were all the runs that Morgan needed for the first five innings as he sat down the first 15 batters he faced. Morgan's perfect game was broken up in the sixth on a hit by pitch, and Dyersburg ended the no-hitter with a couple singles and a run that cut the lead to 2-1.

However, Morgan's offense got the run back and then some in the seventh. The Senators first scored in the inning on a wild pitch, and Conner made it 5-1 with a two-RBI single. It was 6-1 after an RBI single by Vogele, and Myatt doubled after to score Vogele and make it 7-1. The final run of the inning came on an RBI single by Kenny Cox that scored Myatt. 

From there, Park set Dyersburg down in the seventh to win the game. 

GAME TWO: No. 9 Walters State 8, Dyersburg State 0 

In game two, Robertson one-upped his counterpart Morgan with a complete game shutout. 

In his seven innings of work, Robertson (8-1) allowed no runs on four hits and struck out 11. Robertson now has 81 strikeouts in 48.1 innings of work and lowered his ERA to 2.23. He leads the country in strikeouts by 12 and is tied for first in wins. 

At the plate, Fenton picked up three hits and scored three times while Vogele had two more hits and drove in three runs. Torbett had two hits and an RBI, as well. 

Walters State scored two runs in the first to start things off, Conner doubling home Fenton and Vogele grounding out but scoring Conner. The Senators added a run in the fourth on an RBI single by Torbett and a run in the fifth on a wild pitch that scored Holden Pantier to make it 4-0.

In the sixth, Walters State scored two more runs when Vogele doubled in Fenton and Pantier scored Vogele on a groundout. The final two runs came in the seventh on an RBI double by Fenton and an RBI single by Vogele that made it 8-0. 

Meanwhile, Robertson struck out two in the first, one in the second, two in the third, one in the fourth, two in the fifth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh.
