Red Hawk baseball opens season with four weekend wins

HICKORY, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College baseball team is off to its first 4-0 start since 2018 after four wins this weekend against USC Lancaster.

Saturday's baseball doubleheader started with a thrilling 5-1 game one win for Catawba Valley. The Red Hawks trailed USC Lancaster 1-0 through 5.5 innings of game one, but they scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to come away victorious.

Josh Meadows' two-run home run during that sixth inning helped lead the comeback charge for CVCC. Isaiah McDowell and Mason Moseley also had RBI singles in the five-run sixth.

The Red Hawks capped Saturday's doubleheader sweep with an 8-2 win in game two of the set despite only tallying two hits. Drew Berenyl led CVCC with a home run and two RBI in the contest, while Brody Taylor, Eli Marvin and Mozeley each drove in one run each.

On Sunday, Catawba Valley won a 13-9 slugfest in game one of the doubleheader, and the Red Hawks overcame a 4-0 deficit in game two to win 7-6 in nine innings after a late sacrifice fly from Sylas Mills.

The Catawba Valley Community College baseball team returns to action on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. contest on the road against USC Sumter. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
