Jamison hits game winner at Grand Rapids
Vikings hang on for wild road win.
GRAND RAPIDS — With one second to play and trailing by a point, the Glen Oaks Community College men's basketball team executed an inbound play to perfection as Darrius Roach found Will Jamison down the lane and under the hoop for an 85-84 victory Wednesday at Grand Rapids.
The Vikings led by as many as 13 (66-53) with just under 11 minutes to play in the second half. But Grand Rapids went on a 6-0 run to get back to within seven. Darrius Roach, who scored a team-high 20 points, stopped the bleeding with a bucket but GRCC chipped away at the foul line to make it a two-possession game. At 70-66 with 5:19 to go, Amauri Moore gave the Vikings some breathing room with a 3-point play.
A made shot by Tyran Thomas closed the gap to 75-72 as Grand Rapids continued to keep pace by way of the foul line. Soon after, GRCC tied things up at 76-76 with just 2:25 remaining and would go on to take a 78-77 lead after Thomas connected at the stripe — the first lead for the Raiders since the 8:07 mark in the first half.
Back-to-back baskets by Roach put Glen Oaks back out front 83-82 with under a minute to go, but Thomas threw one down off a Viking turnover to give GRCC the lead with 13 seconds to play.
A missed 3-pointer by Mike Phillips was rebounded by Akin Smith. A jump-ball call with two seconds remaining gave the Vikings another chance. Glen Oaks coach Mike Elliott drew up the inbound play and the Vikings got an easy layup by Jamison for the win.
Phillips and Nate Keil got things rolling for GOCC in the first half with 3-pointers but Grand Rapids would eventually build an 19-10 cushion by the 13:37 mark. Phillips scored four unanswered points, Taurus Baugh had a bucket and four free throws and Jamison made a shot to get GOCC back to within two points midway through the half. A Roach 3-pointer and a Baugh bucket later tied the game at 27-27.
Two Aaron Humphrey Jr. field goals started what would become a 14-2 Viking run. Smith drained a 3-pointer, followed by back-to-back field goals by Jamison and a Humphrey Jr. triple during that stretch. Ananias Evans' 3-pointer with 29 seconds left in the half helped GOCC go into the locker room with a 48-39 lead.
Phillips, Baugh and Jamison each registered 12 points for Glen Oaks, which improved to 15-11 overall and 8-4 in MCCAA Western Conference play. Moore finished with nine points, Humphrey Jr. had eight, Smith ended with six, and both Evans and Keil had three. Smith led the team with four assists, Humphrey Jr. brought down 10 rebounds and blocked two shots, and Baugh had eight boards.
Both teams scored 16 points at the foul line and were close in overall shooting percentage (42.5 for Glen Oaks and 43.2 for Grand Rapids), but the Vikings held the Raiders to just 14.3 percent from behind the arc.
